Today is #InternationalVolunteerDay! Here's a recap of recent H.O.P.E. Was Here screenings that are igniting volunteer abroad conversations around the world.
Boston University, Boston, MA, USA
In late November, we visited Boston for two consecutive screenings to BU College of Communication's introductory lecture course. Both screenings--the first to 420 students and the second to 150 students--were followed by 15-minute Q&As. After watching, many students expressed reflections of their own volunteer experiences by comparing them to the trip that unfolds in H.O.P.E. Was Here.
Director Mark Denega chats with a Boston University student after a screening of H.O.P.E. Was Here (2014).
The most intriguing--and challenging--question came from a female student who, impassioned to volunteer, didn't know what to do next: "I want to get involved with volunteering, but I want to do it the right way. What should I do?"
It's a loaded question, but the honest answer is the same as what she's likely heard from her professors this semester: the homework. Do the homework.
Global Brigades at University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Just before hitting Boston, H.O.P.E. Was Here screened to Global Brigades at the University of Pittsburgh. Global Brigades is, according to Wikipedia, "the largest, student-led, nonprofit health and sustainable development organization with varied membership that spans North American and European universities. Participating student and professional volunteers empower communities in developing countries with sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and environment, while respecting local culture."
On deciding to screen to her organization, Pittsburgh Global Brigades student leader Jenna Hanner said the film "captured so many things that people need to hear in the realm of international service."
International Volunteer Day in Lochristi, Belgium
Today, on International Volunteer Day, H.O.P.E. Was Here will screen in Lochristi, a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The screening, a collaboration of different community services within the city, is part of a day-long series of events to recognize and engage volunteers in Lochristi.
